“Shame shame” yells and demonstrations by opposition MPs on Friday responded to Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s reading of President Droupadi Murmu’s English address during a joint sitting of Parliament.

The demonstrations started after the terrible stampede at the continuing Mahakumbh mela in Prayagraj was mentioned. Opposition leaders disturbed by Dhankhar’s account of the incident earlier this week said “shame,” disgrace.”

Murmu expressed regret over the death toll in the Wednesday stampede and stated in her speech the Mahakumbh is a celebration of India’s cultural legacy and social conscience.

“At Prayagraj, millions of pious followers from all throughout the nation and the world have dipped themselves. I convey my grief over the regrettable event on Mauni Amavasya and hope for a quick healing of the victims.” She stated.

The speech by the President underlined the relevance of the Mahakumbh as a celebration of social conscience and cultural legacy of India.

Mahakumbh stampede: Court of inquiry starts

On Tuesday, a stampede developed when a large gathering of followers assembled at the Sangam Ghats for the “Amrit Snan” on the occasion of “Mauni Amavasya.”

Officially starting its investigation on the catastrophic stampede that happened on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya during the Prayagraj Mahakumbh, the three-member judicial commission formed has formally started its work, according a release.

Arriving at their Janpath, Lucknow office on Thursday, the panel members got right to work on the inquiry.

President Murmu on Conflict in Manipur

Few opposition members were heard chanting, “Manipur, Manipur,” earlier when President Murmu discussed northeastern states in her address.

Pre-dawn rush in the Sangam region of the Maha Kumbh on Wednesday claimed at least thirty lives and sixty injuries as millions of pilgrims jostled for space to take a sacred bath on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya, one of the most fortunate days of the Hindu calendar.
