New Delhi: India condemned the vandalism of the residence of Bangladesh’s founding leader, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, in Dhaka on Thursday, describing the incident as “regrettable.”
In response to media inquiries regarding the vandalism of Rahman’s residence, the Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, “It is regrettable that the historic residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, a symbol of the heroic resistance of the people of Bangladesh against the forces of occupation and oppression, was destroyed on February 5, 2025.”
“The significance of this residence for the national consciousness of Bangladesh is recognized by all who appreciate the freedom struggle that fostered Bangla identity and pride.” He further stated that this act of vandalism should be strongly condemned.
According to the Dhaka Tribune, Rahman’s residence in Dhaka was vandalized by a throng on Wednesday. Flames were observed on one of the levels of the residence.
According to the Dhaka Tribune, the demonstrators, who were purportedly seeking a ban on the Awami League, entered the premises by breaching the gate, resulting in extensive damage, as reported by UNB.
The protest was associated with an online speech delivered by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, according to local media. Dhaka Tribune reported that social media posts had previously called for a “Bulldozer Procession” to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s residence at Dhanmondi-32 in the event that Sheikh Hasina delivered a speech.
The home was demolished by an excavator by 10:45 p.m. local time. Protesters, who arrived at the rally at approximately 8 p.m., forced their way in by bursting into the main gate and subsequently vandalizing the property. As per the Dhaka Tribune report, numerous protestors allegedly scaled the second floor and utilized hammers, crowbars, and wooden planks to deface portraits of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and inflict harm on certain areas of the historic house.
