United States President Donald Trump defended his severe tariff policy during the first address of his second term in a joint session of the Congress. He reminded the audience that the United States has been subjected to high tariffs from a number of countries, including India.

“If your product is not manufactured in the United States during the Trump administration, you will be subject to a tariff, which may be substantial in certain instances.” Trump stated during his address that other nations have employed tariffs against us for decades, and now it is our turn to begin employing them against them.

“It is extremely unjust.”

India was included in the list of countries that Trump claimed impose “tremendous” tariffs on the United States. “Have you heard of the European Union, China, Brazil, India, Mexico, and Canada on average?” “And countless other nations impose tariffs on us that are significantly higher than those we impose on them,” Trump stated.

Additionally, he stated, “It is extremely unjust.”

Trump singled out India during the speech, asserting that “India imposes auto tariffs on us that exceed 100 percent.”

He also stated that the average tariff on our products in China is twice as high as the tariff we charge, and the average tariff in South Korea is four times higher.

Trump declared that the United States will implement reciprocal tariffs on numerous countries beginning on April 2, as opposed to April 1, in order to avoid the occurrence of “April Fools Day.”

“I intended to make April 1st on April 2nd, but I was hesitant to risk being accused of being an April Fool… The sum is substantial.” “Reciprocal tariffs will be implemented on April 2nd. We will impose tariffs on them in return for any tariffs they impose on us. If they implement non-monetary tariffs to exclude us from their market, we will impose non-monetary tariffs to exclude them from our market,” Trump stated during his speech.

His supporters in the House responded to Trump’s announcement of reciprocal tariffs with a resounding standing ovation.

The announcements were made in response to the United States’ decision to implement 25 percent tariffs on its largest trade partners, Canada and Mexico, as well as its neighboring countries, on Tuesday. On Tuesday, the United States increased tariffs on Chinese products from 10% to 20%, citing China’s alleged involvement in fentanyl production.
