The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has enhanced the security of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar by adding a bulletproof car to his existing Z-category security detail, according to government sources, Times Now learnt on Wednesday morning.
Currently, Jaishankar is protected by a team of 33 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) commandos, who provide round-the-clock security. Furthermore, security measures around his official residence in Delhi have been intensified.\
Notably, this development comes amid rising military tensions between India and Pakistan along the border, following the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor.
What is Z-category security cover?
Z-category security, the third-highest level of protection in India, consists of 22 personnel, including 4 to 6 NSG commandos, local police, and at least one bulletproof vehicle. It also includes escort vehicles.
In October 2023, Jaishankar’s security was upgraded from Y to Z category, following a threat assessment by the Intelligence Bureau (IB).
At the time, Jaishankar’s security detail included 12 armed static guards at his residence, six Personal Security Officers (PSOs), 12 escort commandos in three shifts, three watchers working in shifts, and three trained drivers available 24/7.
