Police in southern India claimed to have detained two guys suspected of gang rape of an Israeli and a local woman
On Thursday night, police officer Ram L. Arasiddi claimed the Israeli and her homestay operator were stargazing in Koppal town in southern Karnataka state beside three male vacationers, an American and two Indians.
An first inquiry turned up three males riding a motorcycle approaching them in want of money. Arasiddi claimed that after disputes, the three guys threw the male passengers into a nearby water canal and sexually attacked the women. One of the Indian visitors drowned; his body was found Saturday. Along with another Indian, the American swam to safety.
From Bengaluru, India’s entrepreneurial and technological powerhouse, Koppal is roughly 350 kilometers (217 miles).
Arasiddi claimed that on Saturday two of the three suspects were apprehended by police assembling a special investigation squad. He claimed, they were under investigation on suspected attempted murder, gang rape, and robbery.
Generally speaking, the Associated Press does not name victims of sexual assault.
With police noting 31,516 rape crimes in 2022, a 20% rise from 2021, the National Crime Records Bureau reports that sexual assaults on women have grown commonplace in India. The taboo around sexual abuse and victims’ lack of faith in authorities lead one to believe the actual count is far higher.
Since the horrific 2012 gang rape and killing of a 23-year-old student on a New Delhi bus, rape and sexual violence have come under close attention. The attack spurred large-scale demonstrations and motivated legislators to mandate the establishment of fast-track courts devoted to rape cases and stiffen fines.
2013 saw changes to the rape statute, criminalizing voyeurism and stalking and reducing the age range for adult trials from 18 to 16. In 2018 the government approved the death sentence for anybody found guilty of raping minors less than twelve years old.
Even with strict rules, it is rare for more than a few weeks to go without another horrific sexual assault being documented.
Notable examples involving foreign tourists have attracted global attention to the problem. In a later deleted film, a Spanish visitor claimed his wife was raped in northern India, while an Indian-American woman said she was raped at a New Delhi hotel. A British visitor was raped in Goa front of her boyfriend in 2022.
